English 원문
The basin rim felt sun-warm, but the water below stayed cool. Max pressed his knees into the damp grass, the blades still springy and evergreen despite a short midsummer drought that had left other patches brittle. His goal was clear: draw the half-submerged wooden block toward the vortex eye. The block, which had been sanded smooth that morning, offered little grip for the current. He gripped a thin wooden stick; the dry shaft scratched his palm while its dipped end slid like silk through the water. Patient circles carved a tight swirl, each stroke sending soft ridges outward. Yet the block drifted only a hand-span, its edge bumping the steadfast rim whenever a stray ripple rebounded. Relentless droplets flicked over the side, darkening the splash apron. Max kept stirring; vibration travelled up his wrist, but the wider basin still refused to spin as one body.
He switched tactics. The bundled chopsticks resting on the cross-bar pressed flat against his skin, and their combined width pushed heavier sheets of water with each slow sweep. Momentum spread; the outer surface began sliding, and the funnel deepened until light bent along the shining walls. Just as the block started its inward crawl, a dry gust flipped a page of Orion’s notebook at the supply towel. The loose sheet skimmed the grass, slapped the cool rim, and landed in the spinning water. “Whoa, paper overboard!” Orion laughed from his spot. Paper soaked fast, grew heavy, and sagged toward the funnel, trapping the block. Max pinched the sodden corner; mushy fibres clung tenaciously to his thumb. Lifting the sheet tore the spiral apart, and the block stalled near centre, rocking in a faint wobble. Max rubbed the scraped knuckle against his shorts and watched tiny ripples fade.
Two finger-widths of water now separated the mirror surface from the rim.
