English 원문
“Whose walking stick is that?” Britt tapped Gwen’s sleeve and pointed toward the polished staff leaning against the far end of the mossy trunk that always blocked this trail. On every earlier hike nothing but flattened leaves had rested there, so the sudden emergence of the stick puzzled them both. Light rain silvered the bark, and the moss—once the quintessence of gentle grip—now shone with blue-grey beads. Britt placed a boot on top; the layer squelched, slid, and forced a hop backward. Their companion Gwen searched the branch debris zone and lifted a thicker limb; the piece had been stripped clean by earlier boots and promised steadier support. Britt angled it across the trunk, testing weight, while shallow puddles mirrored the broken canopy above.
A sharp rustle at the upturned root plate startled them: a squirrel burst out, brushed Gwen’s boot, and vanished beneath the tangled roots. The children hurried after the blur for a few steps, only to watch it disappear into dripping undergrowth. That brief chase drew them away from the trunk, and in those moments the drizzle thickened into steady rain. When they returned, water streamed along hidden grooves beside the log, letting mud interact with the moss until the surface resembled smooth soap. Their earlier foothold no longer existed. Droplets worked like a silent catalyst, loosening grains and turning the green carpet into slick paste. Britt studied the changed scene and noticed a narrow strip of firmer soil hugging the trunk where the water drained away untouched.
He pressed a heel onto the strip; the ground stayed solid. Previous crossings had smoothed a shallow channel there, yet hurried jumps had hidden it. Britt rolled the branch into place as a short bridge, stepped onto the dry band, and guided Gwen across. Fern fronds ticked their knees, and the walking stick steadied each move. Reaching the far side, rain hissed on the glossy bark behind them. He lifted the borrowed walking stick, shook off gathered droplets, and leaned it back against the trunk, the chrome tip flashing blue-grey where the canopy gap caught the light.
