When the Middle Tile Moved, the Cup Rang True-

English 원문
Warm earth and metal burst from the newly fired cup as Jasper lifted it from the cooling rack. With steady steps he carried it toward the glaze reference shelf, roughly shoulder-high and farther from the tap-test table. He wanted to check its ring, yet the shelf sat uncomfortably high above eye level. His first game plan was simple: raise the cup until his ear touched the rim. A soft felt pad under the base still left a thin gap between clay and wood. He carefully tried to fill in that space with one thin square sample tile piece. When he tapped with the wooden dowel, a muted tone floated out, almost a ping, almost a thud. Behind him, the kiln fan hummed, masking the fading note and leaving the cup’s true state unclear. He leaned close and whispered, "Clear or cracked, old cup, tell me your secret now."
Unsure whether the sound came from a hidden crack or from the stand itself, Jasper added a second, thicker tile. The growing stack rose shakily, and the cup leaned left across the felt pad. He slid a third, flatter tile under the right edge, hoping symmetry would sharpen the resonance. The extra weight shifted upward, and an unseen wobble slowly crawled through the fragile pile. If the tiles had matched in thickness, that wobble would not have grown so quickly. When he tapped again, vibrations travelled down the uneven tower and nudged the rubber mallet beside it. The mallet rolled three hand spans and its soft head kissed a row of bowls. Each bowl bumped the next like slow dominos, raising a chorus of uneven pings upward. The final bowl slid against the reject bin and the lid rattled, a perplexed rattle offering no clear verdict on the cup.
With the pottery choir still trembling, Jasper kept the rubber mallet ready as a last resort, yet chose a subtler fix first. He reached in and, as a last resort strategy, pinched the middle tile straight out of the stack. The sudden subtraction let the cup settle flat against the first tile and the tower’s sway ceased. He tapped once more; a crisp, ringing note lifted cleanly above the brief lull in the fan, and no bowl moved further. A chip the size of a seed, broken loose in the shuffle, had landed glaze-side up beside the table leg. Near that leg, the fragile speck twirled slowly in a shallow circle across the dusty wood.
