English 원문
No bell jangled above the cotton-candy cart as dusk gathered; only the soft hum of the drum idled in the quiet gap before the evening rush. Everett rolled his shoulders, the mild heat radiating through the metal skin brushing his knuckles with oven-door warmth. A row of paper cones waited like pale quills, their tips untouched by sugar. He lifted one, noting how the awning bulbs had not yet warmed the air beneath the striped canvas. Farther down the lane, organ pipes crackled through tin speakers, yet no footsteps paused beside the cart. The missing clang of coins inside the tip tin hung in the air, an absence felt through the stillness of his own breathing.
A sudden cluster of children approached, and momentum returned to the machine the moment Everett tipped a scoop of crystals into the reservoir. Steamless heat liquefied the sugar; then the drum spun, flinging threads into a pastel spectrum that fluttered like moth wings above the basin. "Pink and blue, please," a small voice said. Everett angled the cone, slow and steady, allowing filaments to cling in widening rings. Seldom had the thin strands looked so fine, yet their delicacy demanded patience; one hurried pass would shear them before they cooled. A nearby speaker launched a jaunty overture, its brass stabs synchronizing with the rising pitch of the motor, and the filaments pulsed to the rhythm.
Only when the final ribbon neared the cone did a painted bandwagon rattle over the gravel behind him, the wheels shaking the ground and jostling his elbow. The cone wobbled; sugar cloud tore free and drifted sideways, landing on the warm bulbs where it melted to syrup. Everett steadied his hand, but the jerk had hastened the drum, and thicker ropes began to form, caramel darkening at their edges. Were the motor any slower, the crystals would clump untouched against the rim; yet reducing speed now would scorch what remained in the center. His fingers hovered, then he altered posture—he lifted the cone higher, rotating with shorter arcs, letting the heavier ropes wrap the gaps left by the lost filaments.
A fledgling sparrow, drawn by the sweetness, darted through the awning’s thermal updraft, wings stirring the newly gathered cloud yet leaving it intact. Everett exhaled, trimmed the strands with a brief twist, and set the uneven, marbled puff into the waiting palm. "Looks like a sunset," the child whispered before skipping away. With the queue finally sparse, Everett flicked sugar dust from his cuffs. The same switch he touched every night clicked, and the drum slowed, but the silence that followed met a sky still humming with music and bird-wings. Light from the bulbs coated his empty cone holder, familiar cardboard glowing oddly golden against the cooling metal surface.
