English 원문
Faye stood a step inside the doorway, watching Tobias balance two mugs beside the stove. Steam rose, carrying jasmine sweetness that softened the chill clinging to the kitchen tiles. Between them and the wider room, the frost-laden window glimmered like spun sugar, every pane crowded with crystal ferns. An empty chair faced that brightness, pushed back a little farther than the other, its cushion still unpressed. The sight made her linger, as though the chair guarded a silence no one wished to disturb. Faint daylight spilled across the floorboards, stopping short of that cushion as if respecting the gap. Between shifting pools of steaming breath, the glow hesitated.
She crossed to the glass and pressed a fingertip against it; a clear dot appeared, then clouded as breath condensed and refroze. Outside, a nightingale darted above the pale lawn, its quick shadow flicking over snow before vanishing among bare shrubs. The bird fled too swiftly, and the dot in the frost felt small, so she widened it, circling with slow, deliberate pressure. Crystals crackled under her nail, the chill biting through the thin skin at every knuckle. Its curved filigree ran sideways, mocking intuition that cold should settle evenly. Light seeped through the hole, yet the surrounding glare still masked most of the yard. Faye blinked, unsure whether the faint outline beyond was fence, branch, or simply imagination caught in ice.
Her hand paused midway through another scrape, wrist hovering as a faint shiver passed through the pane. Tobias set a mug near her elbow without comment; the cup’s rim carried a painted nightingale, wings frozen in eternal flight. Heat pooled against her skin. Her palm slipped over the glass, repeating the gentle spiral once used to polish brass hinges on a forgotten cabinet. Warmth spread outward, loosening feathery ridges that brute force could not budge. A silky scarf lay over the vacant chair’s backrest. She lifted it by the cooler ends, folded it twice, and massaged the pane until a broad oval cleared. Droplets formed twin tracks, racing one another toward the frame and freezing again before reaching the sill.
Through that new aperture, a stone tortoise sat in the middle of the garden path, several paces from its usual plinth. Snow capped its shell, yet a clean crescent on the stones hinted at recent hands strong enough to shift the weight. The misaligned ornament echoed the emptiness behind her, as though path and kitchen shared an unfinished sentence. Faye wrapped the scarf tighter, collecting stray shards of ice in its folds. She returned the mug to Tobias, fingers brushing ceramic with a short clink. Her fingertip hovered above a fresh plume already knitting across the oval’s rim, poised between clearing and surrender.
