Half Footprint on the Moving Dune Ridge-

English 원문
'Whose footprint ends halfway up the ridge?' June's voice floated across the crest as she steadied herself on the firm windward slope. The shallow impression aligned with no other track, a single heel mark intruding upon the neat ripples that climbed like narrow stairs toward the sky. Between grains the shape already blurred; a gust pushed sand over its curved edge as though erasing a half-drawn letter. Miles crouched beside it, palm hovering but not touching, and traced the outline in the air, measuring the gap where the forefoot should have landed. Wind hissed over the dune spine, and the space around the broken trace held a breath that waited for an answer.
Miles eased his pack onto the crest, and a droplet escaped the tilted canteen, weeping into pale sand that darkened around the tiny crater. The damp grains clumped, beginning to solidify into a faint crust while the powdery surface nearby still slipped away at the lightest breath of wind. He pinched a slim reed from the pack—yesterday’s measuring rod—and planted it upright beside the half print, marking depth. The reed swayed once, then leaned; the slope beneath it migrated grain by grain, refusing a stable anchor. June unrolled a narrow length of cloth from her sleeve, its edge frayed by long journeys in sun and salt, and offered it without comment.
Rather than force the reed deeper, Miles paused, fingers hovering above the restless sand. He threaded June’s strip through a notch near the top. Together they stretched the cloth crosswise over the gap, trying to suspend the marker between windward firmness and leeward slide. The cloth sagged, yet the makeshift bridge revealed a subtle tilt: its shadow slanted farther east than he expected. That half footprint now aligned with his own stride; the ridge itself had crawled during the ascent, carrying the heel mark sideways. A hush of anticipation lay over the open span, as though the dune waited to see whether its secret would remain unnoticed.
Miles straightened, a brief squint toward the horizon where dunes rippled like frozen waves, then glanced back at the bridge of cloth. He lifted the reed, brushed clingy sand from its base, and considered planting it again farther up the crest. Instead, he stepped to the leeward edge and watched powder flow in silent sheets, the earlier mystery no longer strange but silently instructive: the dune rewrote tracks as casually as wind rearranged clouds. June laughed once, light and short, then began trekking toward the next rise. Miles followed, pausing at the vanished footprint. He pressed the reed into the fresh line more gently, its tip disappearing among still-moving grains.
