English 원문
Inigo lowered the wooden pick into the shallow basin, already circling the water as if tracing an invisible path around the cocoons. A ceiling beam ran the span of the room, three arm-lengths overhead, making the space feel both vaulted and surprisingly intimate. Between basin and reel stretched a half-meter channel of empty air where four filaments twisted together, barely visible until a passing glint betrayed their presence. Each turn of his wrist drew another span of silk, and the cocoon collapsed inward, its curved surface denting like a hollow fruit. The only sound inside the enclosure came from the reel: a muted click whenever the crank completed a circuit across the notched peg.
Eve, standing near the doorway, aligned three empty frames against the opposite wall, judging the clearance between them and the narrow passage that continued beyond. The corridor behind her receded like a long throat, its floorboards forming a straight line that vanished beneath a far threshold. A single brass doorknob protruded halfway along that wall, exactly elbow-height, shining faintly where many palms had polished it over seasons of use. Light from the window cut across the frames and caught in the early wraps on Inigo’s reel, drawing a gleaming stripe across the planks. Eve paused, wrist locked mid-reach, then shifted the frames a finger-width farther, a private geometry exercise only she could fathom.
A swallow’s shadow slid suddenly over the basin, and Inigo’s hand jerked, slack blooming in the twisted bundle mid-air. The filament sagged, brushed the water, and clung to its own reflection, threatening to loop itself into a knot no reel could forgive. He steadied the pick, thumb hovering above the crank while he gauged the span to the reel and the line’s new drift. “Hold the reel steady a moment?” his voice reached Eve, soft enough not to ripple the floating cocoons. Eve crossed the room in two careful steps, shoulders angled past the hanging threads, and positioned two fingertips on the frame’s rim. Inigo cranked once; the slack lifted, the water released the filament, and the cocoon resumed shrinking, its shell peeling with almost wholesome patience. Their eyes met only through the reflection that trembled across the basin’s surface before the shadow of the swallow vanished from the ceiling.
Later, when the spool thickened to a pale cylinder, Eve eased back toward her stacked frames, though one fingertip lingered on the crank’s worn peg. Inigo slipped the new strand onto the ceramic dish, comparing its taut, gleaming coils with the sagging filaments still waiting their turn. The silent agreement between them counted evenness, not speed, as their measure of success, and the room’s geometries now lay adjusted to that rhythm. A faint click sounded behind; the brass doorknob, nudged by the shifting frames, loosened and settled crooked, its circle marred by a fresh crescent chip. Neither spoke; the damaged metal caught a sliver of light, dull beside the silk’s sheen, while the reel answered with one last muted click.
