She tipped it, and a quiet trickle escaped before the spout reached the soil, darkening the powdery surface in uneven blotches. Warm amber light refracted through the water beads clinging to a single leaf edge. One bead slipped off, leaving a neat gap that exposed a scar where a leaf had once sprouted. That patch of blankness, oddly precise, seemed to foster the surrounding greenery, each neighboring tendril standing clearer because of the absence. Her hand hovered in mid-air, mirroring the curve she had failed to engrave minutes earlier.

Lenora set the watering jug on the sill, loosening her grip deliberately against its cool weight. She returned to the bench yet kept the stylus untouched; instead, she lifted the plate to eye level and turned it toward the window. The empty copper stretch that had stalled her strokes earlier now echoed the lost leaf on the plant, and the composition breathed around that vacancy.
