First he needed more height, so Glynis held the post while he leaned forward and tugged. The cloth stretched farther, humming under tension, then the knot at the far post shifted and sent a sharp bounce through his fingers. The pebble skittered forward, leaving a pale trace of dust across the wood.

They laughed and stepped after it. Working together, Glynis compressed the knot against the rail while Troy twisted the loose tail twice around the post. The strip stayed taut this time and arched neatly above the walkway. Troy reached for the pebble, placed it under the new arch, and tapped it so it rolled between their shoes.
