The platform boards answered with a hush of sawdust, left earlier by a carpenter, and Winter nudged that third powder into a thin curve around the other two lines.

A distant whistle cut through the still air; the platform trembled and the three strips shifted. Where salt and sawdust slid apart, a small paper label slipped into view, no words printed on its blank surface.
