English 원문
Jonas set the flat chisel on the scored line without looking, the rounded handle seating into his glove by habit. A damp mark threaded along the wooden platform under the block, a dark ribbon where drips had linked and then paused at a knot. He lifted the mallet, tapped once, and the chisel bit with a bright crack that sent a spray of ice chips outward. Fresh-cut glassiness shone for a breath before frost bloomed white, while a cold beam slipped through the block and swept the flagstones. Breath hung in the sheltered courtyard, and a crow tilted its head on the wall, then dropped to peck at a glittering flake.
Zola sidled in beside him, mittens brushing his sleeve, and lifted the mallet from his palm with a practiced quarter-turn. “Here,” she said, placing it back when his chisel needed a nudge, their hands crossing and uncrossing without a word about who went first. He did fumble once, a shallow miss that skittered the edge, and Zola steadied the handle with one quiet tap to reset their rhythm. A patron in a red scarf paused by the wall, watching the generous arc of light band colour across the snow-dusted stones like a slow brush. Altruism had no place on the platform; the sun gave its glare to wall and snow alike, while the crow took sparkle and left neat prints.
The ice answered differently as the afternoon settled; the bite softened, and the chisel skimmed unless he lifted the handle a degree steeper. His next tap staggered, then steadied, the wooden mallet head knocking a cleaner crescent that flashed clear before the air dressed it in white. A thin cloud crossed the sun, and the beam dulled, then returned, slipping farther along the courtyard than he expected and brushing the damp ribbon. He set the mallet down, pressed a gloved palm to the cold face, and angled the chisel to shave one broader pane beside the scored guide. The beam kinked through that new facet and lay exactly along the dark mark, a line he had taken for runoff now lit from within its grain.
Zola leaned closer, not touching, while the prismatic band slid off the wood knot and tracked the platform’s grain toward the corner drip, slow as a clock hand. “Colors on the snow,” she said, her voice small in the open air, and the crow hopped once and lost interest in their bright debris. Jonas lifted the mallet again, choosing to continue along the guide, yet his eyes held the platform longer, where the ribbon shone darker with wet. He reached down and traced the damp ribbon on the platform with one knuckle, the wood cool and a little rough where the grain lifted.
