Zadie pointed toward the garden pond. "What made that big splash?" A small turtle paused on a flat rock near the edge.

Warm light fell across the small yard. A dove landed on the fence and shook dust. The wings beat once, and the turtle drew back. Its shell slid against a floating toy submarine.

The submarine drifted toward the narrow spillway at the edge. A thin string on its nose tightened under floating leaves. The loop tugged a twig that braced tiny pebbles on a board.

The slender twig tipped away from the notch. Pebbles rolled down the smooth board and clinked into a pan. The pan tilted on its stone, lifting one light edge. A dry glove on that edge slid off and dropped.

The glove floated and turned in the small current. It moved toward the outlet grate by the short gate. A brass knob on the frame caught its cuff and held it. Ripple lines pressed past the caught glove and curled under the grate.
