English 원문
Warmth climbed through the crank handle while her fingers kept the circle moving, a slow coil within the tall room’s open span.
Her hand settled there out of habit, the press bed stretching straight ahead, square to the bench, the glass screen far across the floor.
Maeve returned with the copper, rinsed and bare, and set it on the centre of the bed with a nod that needed no answer.
"Here," she said, holding back the felt so the plate could breathe under the high lamps.
Hadley charged the roller, then spread a thin layer across the plate; the metal drank it, and the surface seemed unchanged.
Another pass laid the same dark skin, and another after that, each sweep vanishing into grooves she could not yet see.
She paused with the roller mid-span and nudged the plate a hair to centre it against the ruler marks along the press bed.
When she turned again, the handle caught and the roller engaged the bed; fresh ink swept over copper and disappeared like the last.
High on the far wall, a brass barometer sat within its round frame, its needle parked near the dial’s centre, unmoving above the racks.
The next sweep refused to sink; ink pooled at the borders and clung to tiny burrs.
She wiped the flats clean, laid the damp sheet, and watched the blankets fall evenly from edge to edge across the plate.
Through the middle, resistance thickened, then eased, and the bed carried the plate beneath the roller’s span toward the open space beyond the frame.
When she lifted the paper, the familiar picture lay reversed; the bench narrowed the other way, and the barometer now hung to the left.
A hairline fracture from the wax stage traced a pale diagonal near the corner, hardly more than a breath-width in the field.
Hadley clipped the print to the low rack and stepped back, leaving the crank to cool and the plate to rest on the bed.
On the rack, the new sheet curved slightly at the edges, its reversed lines sitting wet and raised.
The crank handle held a trace of heat, and a faint halo of ink ringed the roller’s rim.

- centre
“She breathed out and centred the plate to the ruler marks, a hair’s breadth from perfect.”
- fracture
“A hairline fracture crossed the print’s corner, a pale thread the roller could not press away.”
- barometer
“High above the racks, the brass barometer held its needle steady, round as a coin against the wall.”
- engage
“With a hitch, the handle turned, and the roller engaged the bed, drawing the plate into motion.”
- layer
“Each new layer of ink vanished into the copper’s grooves before the surface admitted any change.”
