Ingrid sits on the caregiver's lap.
Her back rests on soft cloth.
The smooth page warms under her hand.
A tiny oil smudge shines.
A mild tea smell drifts.
An older sibling turns back a page.
The edge slips down again.
The curled pet presses her leg.
Sun stripes excite tiny dust motes.
Ingrid slides her hand to the edge.
She lifts the corner a little.
It slips again.
The pet gives a small sneeze.
It flips.
The spread folds partway closed.
On the picture, a dream bubble floats.
A drawn fish swims there.
Ingrid pretends to feed the curled pet.
She holds the picture near, then stops.
The grandmother lifts the cloth bookmark from the side table.
"Here, this can hold it," she says.
She sets it in Ingrid's hand.
Ingrid tucks the fold with the bookmark.
The page stays open and flat.
"I see the big boat," the sibling says.
Ingrid presses the lower corner.
