English 원문
A wet band climbed above a ladder of old drip lines on the pane, and Mae read a long warm stretch behind her.
She touched the green crank; a chain tightened along the rafters, and the ridge vent eased wider with one soft click.
Cooler air slid down like a small door opening between climates, and leaves near her elbow lifted, then settled again.
A watering can waited under the bench, heavy with yesterday’s refill, its handle pressing a notch into her palm as she lifted.
Capping the spout with her thumb slowed the pour to a thin thread, and a dark ring spread through the seed tray.
A clay saucer pinged once when a stray stream struck its rim, then the ping died against the glass roof.
She took up the round soil sieve, wrists remembering flour and light circles, and tried the same quick shake over the tray.
Damp compost clung to the mesh and sagged, and the load dragged her hands lower than the motion allowed.
The bench had a faint slope, so coarse bits rolled to one side while the finer grit stayed stalled above her knuckles.
She paused, shifted her grip to the rim, and tapped the frame instead, slower, letting weight and gravity finish what shaking could not.
The wire’s tidy solder lines and even circle held quiet craftsmanship, and the clumps began to break into a siftable rain.
Up above, the narrow vent stood ajar, and a column of drier air seemed to fall where she worked, her forearms cooling.
She turned her shoulders and tilted the sieve into that drop, and the stuck bits loosened as the surface crisped near the edge.
A nasturtium near her wrist held a round mouth the color of yolk, bright and glossy against the dull soil crumbs.
Yolanda potted cuttings along the back wall and glanced up. “Hear that ping?” she said, nodding toward the saucer.
“It’s open a notch,” Mae said, not looking away from the mesh as a butterfly landed on a warm clay rim.
She brushed crumbs into the tray and considered the coarser roll that had collected at the low end.
Rather than return it to the bag, she spread that grit on top like ballast, a thin layer to keep moisture from skating.
She slid the tray until its edge met the cooler column, then stood still as water rose through the mat and darkened the line.
The crank had opened more than breath for leaves; the falling draft sorted damp edges from dry ones.
Mae lifted the sieve again, now angled into the draft, and the mesh released its fine grains with a softer, steadier tap at the rim.
