English 原文
Rain tapped against the front windows while Nora slipped into Maple Bookstore, shaking water from her jacket. The reading corner had been rearranged by the staff into a narrow stage under warm lamps. Rows of folding chairs pressed together, leaving just one empty seat near the poetry judge. Nora had promised her younger brother she would record the event for their parents. If she had arrived later, she would have missed the nervous clearing of throats onstage. She squeezed past scattered backpacks and settled quickly, just as the judge cleared his throat.
From the first poem, a low tension stretched across the room like a thin wire. Nora’s phone shook in her palm, matching the pulse of the rain outside. "Listening ear," whispered her brother beside her, passing a note that displayed the same words in bold ink. His pen drawing made the instruction look like the stern motto of a secret club. Near the end, a tall contestant lifted the trophy from a velvet box, ready for the final recitation. A lamp cable snagged his boot, and the shining cup slipped, struck the wooden floor, and cracked open. Instead of metal, foil-wrapped chocolate coins spilled everywhere, rolling under chairs and across the judge’s notes.
Gasps turned into laughter as contestants chased the sweets, their polished shoes sliding on shiny wrappers. The judge wiped crumbs from his clipboard and announced that improvisation would decide the winner. Each poet grabbed a coin and used the word engraved on it as inspiration for an instant verse. Nora kept recording, yet she wished she had packed her tripod, because her trembling arms wobbled the image. The tall contestant recovered first, rhyming "starlight" with every sweet drop still melting on his tongue. When applause finished, he handed Nora a surviving coin as thanks for the footage, its wrapper stamped with the word "pulse." Golden fragments of foil and chocolate rested under the lamps while a soft hush settled over the stage.
