English 原文
Mila adjusted the paper parcel in her backpack while the town clock struck four crisp notes. A chill breeze combed stray hairs across her eyes, and she brushed them aside. She had promised to deliver the small wooden sculpture to the hillside museum before sunset, and her steps tapped the cobblestones quickly. The piece had been carved by her grandfather, and every groove still carried the scent of cedar. Passing the fountain, she spotted a squirrel hanging from an ivy rope like an acrobat. Its sudden leap scattered dry leaves across her shoes, and her heart kicked against her ribs. Yet, her long-standing habit of keeping an optimistic sketchbook note for each trip kept her pace steady. She wrote only two words on a loose ticket—'new journey'—then tucked it back. A narrow lane beside the bakery offered the fastest route, so she turned without hesitation.
The lane climbed, curved, and narrowed until hedges brushed her elbows lightly. Moist earth released a fresh smell each time her boots pressed the ground. After fifteen minutes, an iron gate appeared, its surface painted bright green. It swung inward with a faint creak; the courtyard beyond looked oddly familiar. A plaque beside the door showed the museum's name, yet the bakery stood one street away. She realised the shortcut had folded upon itself, returning her to the same square she had left. If she had marked the first crossroads, she would have noticed the circle and saved precious time. The delay might seem small, yet its profound impact unfolded immediately before her. Sunset light already stained the clouds orange, and visiting hours ended at five. Mila exhaled, pressed the parcel against her chest, and turned toward home. The wrapped parcel rested in her palm under the soft evening light.
