Mia has visited the riverside park every weekend this spring. A banner above the gate read: CREATIVE MARKET, its bright letters tossing in wind. White chalk divided the nearest square of grass into a neat quadrant for games. She carried a blue kite whose long ribbon trailed behind her trainers. Light gusts passed overhead, yet the kite refused to lift from the soft land. She stepped back, letting the ribbon twirl around her wrist like loose thread. Nearby, a wooden booth was painted blue beside the calm lake water.

A brown dog, which had been chasing fallen leaves, spotted the swirling ribbon at once. Before Mia noticed, the playful nose nudged the ribbon, and the dog sprinted across the field. The sudden pull raised the kite, and bright fabric snapped loud against the afternoon sky. Children stopped their drawings, mouths open, while parents lifted phones toward the surprising flight. The string wrapped around a bench, so the dog slowed and circled until the ribbon loosened. When the wind dropped, the kite drifted down and brushed the grass beside Mia's shoes. She crouched, untangled the ribbon, and the dog's last wag tapped her elbow. Bright fabric lay still on the grass while late sunlight slipped across the quiet bench.
