Maya has visited the small park pond each weekend. She hopes to sketch the white swan that nests beyond the reed line. Late afternoon light brushed the water while a restless wind rattled the narrow wooden bridge. She stepped carefully onto the weathered planks before testing their give. One recent repair had been nailed unevenly, and a thin rift ran along its edge. The board dipped under her weight, splashing drops onto her shoes. Her canvas bag hung at her hip, swinging with each cautious step. It was heavy with pencils and field knowledge from earlier walks. Clouds drifted darker, so she hurried, arms stretched for balance, yet the bridge swayed harder with every gust.

Halfway across, a sudden rustle below snapped the rhythm. A fawn, hidden among young willows, leapt from the shade and brushed the bridge support. The jolt made Maya crouch; her trustworthy strap kept the sketchbook from falling. She pressed a palm to the rail, then shifted tactics. Instead of risking the last planks, she climbed down to the streambed. Flat stones formed an uneven path across the shallow water. Water reached her ankles and cooled her socks, yet steady footing returned. Minutes later she reached the far bank safely. The swan glided closer, tipping its neck like a silent greeting. The curious fawn stepped softly beside the reeds. Pencil met paper while ripples and soft hooves settled around her.
