Kayla balanced on a short wooden stool beside the backyard fence. She has collected a string of energy-efficient lamps for the outdoor dinner later that evening. The ground under her shoes stayed uneven, softened by last night’s rain. A growing clump of mint brushed her ankles. The fence, which separates the path from the lush herb patch, offered the only high line. She used it for hanging the lights. The first hook has been fixed easily, yet the wire that reaches the socket remained too tight. Kayla stepped down and unrolled more cable. She noticed the reels had been packed environmentally, wrapped only in brown paper and twine.

While she measured the distance again, a sudden gust pushed a branch against the wire. The impact knocked the stool sideways. Kayla staggered, caught balance, and watched the stool settle upside-down on the mint. The obstacle from the wind joined the short cable, forming two problems at once. She adjusted her plan. Instead of stretching the wire, she rested the lamps along the thick ivy growing across the fence top. Each bulb leaned on a natural loop. The new path shortened the distance, so the plug finally reached the socket. Just as she clicked the switch, a squirrel skittered over the fence. Its paws scattered the mint leaves like green confetti. The lamps blinked on, scattering soft light across the damp grass.
