Celia Across the Inlet-

English 原文
Mist clung to the harbor, softening cranes, ropes, and stacked containers until they looked sketched in charcoal. Celia, a part-time caregiver at the seaside clinic, balanced a clay pot against her chest and stepped onto the timber walkway. She planned to add the young olive sapling to the clinic courtyard before dusk. That courtyard already managed to harbor a sanctuary of herbs and songbirds, and the thin, gray-green leaves in her pot would fill a gap between mint and marigolds. Diesel engines rumbled below the boards, gulls screeched overhead, and the air carried mixed scents of salt, tar, and fried fish. Around the ticket booth, weekend travelers fumbled with coins, bags, and cameras, spreading across the pier like a restless school of fish.
She tried to navigate the narrow planks, yet motion from every side pressed in. A porter wheeled a trolley piled with crates; one sudden turn let the metal handle intercept her path, brushing her elbow and jolting the pot. Earth spilled over her sleeve, and a hairline crack traced the rim. A whistle shrilled behind her; a forklift creaked forward, nudging barrels toward a loading ramp. Celia shifted her grip, slowed her steps, and angled toward an emptier lane where coiled ropes lay beside a rust-flecked bollard. Suitcases rolled over wood, thumping like muffled drums, while a boy chased a paper boat that darted between rubber wheels.
The queue stalled when a crew member counted boarding passes against a clipboard. Waiting, Celia set the pot on a crate to rest her arms. Through the crack, dry straw poked out. She brushed aside a pinch of soil and uncovered a tiny nest holding three speckled shells no larger than pearls. A nearby passenger gasped; the sound blended with the slap of water against the pier and the clang of a bell announcing departure in five minutes. Instead of brushing the nest away, Celia wrapped her scarf into a ring, padded the gap, and anchored the fragile cradle in place. Fingers that had once folded bandages now pressed the cloth with the same measured care.
Boarding resumed; she eased onto the deck and wedged the pot against a bench leg. Wind tugged at the scarf, yet the nest stayed hidden and still. The ferry slid from the piling, creating low waves that shimmered under late-day light. Engines vibrated through the deck; passengers formed loose clusters, raising phones toward the skyline. Celia leaned at the rail, counting each breath until the clinic roof appeared beyond the inlet. The hull bumped the landing; ropes thudded; a gangway dropped with a clank. She lifted the safeguarded sapling, stepped onto the wharf, and followed the gravel path toward the courtyard. Light rested on the quiet sapling beside the folded cloth.
