Drums boomed, and bright costumes pressed against the windows. The tram was delayed, then halted beside a narrow crossing. Time slipped away while his delivery point stayed far. The driver, who rang the bell in frustration, opened the doors for passengers. Milo stepped down, noticing rain spots that grew into steady drops.

He folded the folder under his jacket and began to navigate lanes that twisted behind old brick shops. Puddles splashed against his shoes, and wind tugged at the qualitative notes he had written about flavor balance. A fearless grin flashed across his face when he spotted a covered arcade ahead. Inside, his cousin Lior stood beside a portable griddle, surprised to see him so soon. The parade, it turned out, had redirected the market into this shelter. Milo adjusted the sugar level according to the notes, and Lior poured batter in quick circles. An unexpected hiss rose as dough met hot iron; sweet steam curled upward and settled around their shoulders.
