English 原文
Just after dawn, Niko stepped out of a tram onto the raised walkway that overlooked the eastern cargo terminal. Cranes traced slow arcs above a mosaic of steel containers, and forklifts stitched quick threads between them. A broad palette of salmon, gold, and violet stretched across the sky, reflecting on the metal roofs below. Niko’s messenger bag bumped against his hip; inside waited a tiny brass compass that his cousin considered the quintessential souvenir of any long voyage. He promised to hand it over before the cousin’s research ship departed at noon. First, though, the parcel of spare parts requested by the chief engineer needed collecting, and it was listed as ready near Dock Seven. The walkway vibrated beneath a fresh rumble of engines announcing a shift change down on the tarmac.
Niko descended the iron stairs and entered the grid where the dynamic supply chain performed its constant, intricate dance. Barcode scanners flashed, carts squeaked, and workers shouted destination codes that bounced off container walls. The label on his collection slip pointed toward a cluster of red crates, yet a forklift slid sideways at that moment, blocking the narrow lane. Its rear wheel caught on a loose sheet of shrink-wrap, and the driver climbed down to unwind the tangling strip. Niko waited, tapping the rail, then spotted his crate already strapped to the rear trailer of a departing caravan of market vans. A clerical blur had placed his engineer’s parts among seasonal fruit bound for the northern plateau. He broke into a jog, but the vans rolled ahead, tires spitting small stones; the tailgate bumped closed before he reached it.
A side door on the last van swung outward when the convoy paused for a security scan, and a familiar face leaned into the morning glare. Mara, a childhood friend now coordinating food logistics, raised an eyebrow at the sight of Niko waving the slip overhead. She laughed, climbed down, and tugged the crate forward; its weight pulled her wrist sideways, and the cord snapped, sending the box sliding. Niko steadied it with a boot, paper puffed from beneath the lid, and an odd cylinder rolled onto the asphalt—another compass, nearly identical to his. The coincidence stalled them both, then the guard’s horn barked for clearance. With quick hands they swapped serial stickers, leaving Mara’s spare produce undisturbed while Niko reclaimed the engineer’s parts. The horn sounded again, the vans eased through the gate. Amber light rested on stacked containers.
