Liam After the Barrier-

English 原文
Late evening air pressed against Liam as he stepped into Southfield Station, jacket collar raised against drizzle. The rush-hour crowd had already begun to fade away, leaving tiled floors echoing under scattered footsteps. Catching the last northbound train was hugely important; his sister’s concert waited at the other end. He moved toward the ticket barrier and tapped his travel card. A red cross flashed. The metal arms stayed locked. His card had been read thousands of times before, yet tonight the gate refused him. Dimmer lights showed the station’s reduced energy consumption for the night shift, and the screen barely glowed.
Liam tried again, this time holding the card against the reader longer. Another buzz rattled the barrier, unchanged. If he had remembered to top up the balance earlier, he would have slipped through by now. A guard approached, examined the card, then stepped back with a shrug; no further help arrived. Liam’s pulse drummed; his hand searched every pocket until an old paper ticket surfaced, damp at the edges. He pressed it toward the scanner, yet the slot swallowed it and returned nothing. Nearby, a side gate had been left ajar for cleaning staff, but its latch clicked shut before his fingers reached it.
Water traced along the ceiling as a passing train pulled away above ground; the vibration rolled through columns and slowly settled. Liam noticed a small green button beside the original barrier, installed after maintenance crews had been hurried through earlier that week. He pressed it; a service panel lifted, revealed a wider space, and the metal arms folded aside. The path opened at last, but the departure board confirmed the scheduled train had already gone. While he exhaled, another notice flicked: an unscheduled stopper would arrive in ten minutes, buying the time he needed. Yellow light hung above the silent rail.
