English 原文
Morning light painted the narrow street in pale yellow, and aroma from fresh bread drifted around parked carts. Milo crouched beside his bicycle, aiming to reach the afternoon procession before the first drumbeat. The frame had been polished the night before, yet a sharp scrape still echoed each time the back wheel turned. He twisted the pedal, but the squeak kept returning. A neighbour’s float, already richly decorated with ribbons and paper lanterns, rolled past and showered sawdust onto the tools. Milo brushed the grit away, only to watch three loose screws slip from his palm; he tried to juggle them, failed, and one vanished between cobblestones.
He had always believed the noise came from the chain, so he realigned every link. The sound grew louder instead, and his shoulders stiffened. When the baker’s son offered a wrench, Milo discovered the real problem: the brake caliper rubbed the rim. He loosened it, yet the lever stayed rigid. If Milo had carried his full toolkit, he would have solved it quickly, but half his instruments had been borrowed and never returned. He rummaged again, found a paint-stained ribbon, and tied the lever open; the wheel finally spun freely but refused to stop. A drumroll thundered farther up the street. The audience would scatter if a rider could not brake, so Milo needed another idea.
Steam from a food stall drifted across the road, moistening the ribbon and causing it to sag. The lever snapped back with a metallic click, landing in the perfect middle position; the wheel slowed without squeaking. Milo blinked at the accidental repair and hurried toward the square. When he arrived, a performer dropped his juggling pins and pulled Milo onto the platform, pointing at the silent bicycle as proof of good luck. If the rider had not struggled, the parade organizers would have missed that omen. Evening light rested on the bicycle’s quiet wheels.
