The bird’s white plumage reflected a burst of light where the clouds broke. The beam crossed the clearing, struck the spinning toy, and the painted cat sprinted inside the zoetrope’s windows. Nora kept the camera running until the shaft dimmed above the leaves.

Later in the afternoon, Nora settled on a fallen log and replayed the clip. The scene had been filmed from an unsteady angle, yet every frame glimmered. Painted jaguar racing, real jaguar crossing behind, heron rising like a sudden brushstroke. She wished she had packed a stronger battery; the indicator blinked red after only a minute of review. Even so, the unexpected overlap of toy and wilderness flickered on the small screen like a traveling fair’s lantern show. The zoetrope rested on the mossy stone, its stripes of light still circling.
