Milo stood in the school science room, where bright pots, bowls, and tubes covered every surface. The afternoon project counted as food science, yet the scene looked like a noisy café. A lively kitchen collaboration had taken shape; classmates moved side by side, and spoons clicked in steady rhythm. Milo’s own station showed flour, berries, and foaming juice. He planned to build colorful layers inside a clear jar, so he began to scatter ingredients across wax paper, letting the powders fall like light rain. The written recipe had been shared by an older cousin, and Milo had already weighed each portion twice, convinced the balance would keep the layers neat.
Next he slid the jar into a small centrifuge borrowed from the physics cupboard. The motor hummed, then shook; syrup streaked the lid. If Milo had tightened the latch, the liquid would have stayed inside. He paused, wiped sticky drops from his sleeves, and tried again with thicker glass. The second spin rattled even more, and the machine stalled. A bent spoon lay jammed between blades. Milo reached for long metal tongs, slipped them through the hatch, and freed the spoon, yet the clock on the wall kept rolling forward. Flour dust drifted and settled on tables, marking every failed attempt like pale snow.
When he lifted the jar for a final test, a classmate brushed past, carrying a small xerophyte for her desert-plant display. A slender leaf snapped off and glided into Milo’s open bowl. Instead of brushing it away, he tucked the strip along the inner glass; its waxy surface braced the mixture, holding each stripe firm. The centrifuge whirred once more, smooth and steady this time, and layered bands shone through the jar as if painted. By the time the bell rang, jars lined the window, each one gleaming. Steam drifted above the bright glass bowls.
