Milo Beside the Stalled Crane-

English 原文
Milo balanced on a paint-splashed stool beneath the workshop roof. His science-fair project, a pocket-sized crane, waited on the bench. The arm, built from an ice-cream stick and a toy motor, aimed to hoist a miniature steel girder onto a cardboard bridge. He had spent weeks soldering wires until the device finally whirred. A tiny coil lay behind the switch; when current passed through, magnetic excitation inside the coil ought to raise the arm smoothly. The teacher had been impressed when the plan was first described, and Milo had hoped the demonstration would unfold without drama.
He pressed the button. A brief click, then silence. The arm refused to move. Milo opened the housing; a grain of sawdust blocked the gear mechanism. He brushed it away, tightened the screw, and tried again. The motor spun, yet the hook drifted sideways, dropping the steel girder onto the mat. If the hook had carried more weight, the fragile bridge would have collapsed. Sweat dotted his nose as he replaced the nylon thread with a stronger strand. Even then, the arm wobbled because the axle had been mounted crookedly. The second failure left his shoulders tense, but he kept adjusting alignments until every cog meshed.
On the third attempt, the motor purred, the arm lifted, and the hook steadied over the bridge. Just then, a loud pop sounded; a hidden balloon under the platform burst, sending confetti into the air. Milo blinked while bright paper drifted around the bench—his friend Vida had secretly added the balloon as a surprise catalyst, hoping to turn a routine lift into a spectacle. For a moment the crowd gasped, then laughter rolled across the room as the crane completed its journey. The hook set the steel girder into place, confetti settled on the bridge, and the tiny wheel rested against the polished track.
