A sharp gust pushed against him, and the first shot blurred despite the heavy tripod legs. When he tightened the mount, a wave lapped higher; salty spray dotted the filter like tiny mirrors. The pier boards, rotten in places, jolted each time another host of gulls lifted noisily into flight. If he had arrived later, the rising tide would have swallowed the lower platform completely. Mateo shifted backward, yet the new angle trapped the sun right behind the lens and washed colours away. By then, his jacket had been spattered by foam, and the camera cloth sagged with moisture. He paused, breathed against chilled fingers, and stepped onto a higher beam that offered steadier footing.

From that beam, the meeting currents suddenly knotted, drawing seaweed, driftwood, and stray rope into one vast figure. For several seconds the shape resembled a sleeping kraken, tentacles stretching beneath the glassy skin of water. Mateo’s pulse beat against his collar, yet he steadied the shutter and captured three clean frames. A minute later the pattern broke apart, scattered by another gust and the tireless tug of the tide. He checked the screen; colors glowed sharper than he had dared expect, and every twisting limb showed clear. The camera rested against the steady beam under soft morning light, while gulls circled overhead.
