Milo adjusted the small backpack that carried sandwiches and fruit. A faded wildcat badge swung near the zipper. Beside him, Raya studied the narrow wooden bridge stretching over a shallow canyon. They hoped to reach a sunny ledge on the opposite side for lunch. They have walked since sunrise, so the bridge offered a welcome pause. Cool air smelled of damp stone, and afternoon light danced across the water. A vole darted between stones below, startling a line of ants. When Milo placed a boot on the first plank, wind rushed through. It brushed his cheek like a single whisker. The board wobbled, and his arms rose for balance.

Raya moved ahead to steady the railing, yet her quicker pace shook the structure. The railing had been repaired with fresh wire, yet gaps still showed. Water from last night’s rain slid beneath, joining the gently roaring stream. Her footsteps created one rhythm, and the sideways wind created another. Milo paused, then motioned for a trade. He moved ahead while she anchored the loose rope. They exchanged places carefully, each step landing where the plank looked firm. With the weight now divided, the shaking eased, and both reached the opposite bank. A sudden laugh escaped when they saw the ledge already occupied by a family of curious goats. This unexpected audience turned the plan around. Milo opened the basket on the gravel near the bridge. Crumbs scattered, and the vole reappeared, snatching one before disappearing behind a stone. The two friends sat on a smooth slab while sunlight flickered through the canyon walls. Water kept roaring below, yet above, only quiet chewing filled the air.
