Small seeds were scattered along the border, pricking against the soft belly.

The grass bent one way, yet a cool breeze blew in the contrary direction, sending loose leaves straight across the hedgehog’s nose and hiding the scent of water. Nose twitching, the creature climbed onto a low brick that edged the flowerbed; the height kept the grass below its spines. Halfway along, a forgotten roof tile rested like a narrow bridge.
