Leo stepped through the wooden gate of the community garden, carrying an empty bottle. Warm earth met the cool air, and a faint scent of rosemary moved with the breeze. He has visited the plot every weekend this summer, and the abundant rows of lettuce now brushed against his knees. The tap that stood near the carrots looked old but solid; filling the bottle seemed simple, and he hoped to have fun flying his kite afterward. The metal handle was stiff, so he leaned his weight on it.

Something clicked, yet no water came. A cloud passed, wind pushed loose plastic across the path, and a child’s ball rolled toward the beds, blocking Leo’s foot. While bending to move the ball, his elbow hit the tap. Suddenly the faucet burst alive; a clear arc leapt out and soaked his shirt. Startled, he laughed, then twisted the bottle under the stream. As the container filled, the clouds began to open up above him, letting bright light spill over the soil. Droplets ran off his sleeves, but the garden still made him feel at home. He placed the bottle on a bench, and the water inside settled without a ripple.
