English 原文
Marcus balanced on the shallow ledge behind the library fountain, while Lina held a square raft made of bamboo and empty tin cans. The wooden frame had been built by neighbors; the cans had been washed carefully to stop a thin film of pollution from spreading when the raft touched water. Last month, volunteers from a global initiative had unloaded the bamboo, but the two friends still needed to finish the job. Their goal was simple and visible: float the raft in the fountain and cover it with moss so the coming science fair could point to one small, sustainable corner in town. A distant bell chimed noon as Marcus pushed the dripping raft toward the stone basin.
The raft slid, then stopped. Thick algae clung to the fountain floor and gripped every corner like glue, refusing to let the structure drift. Lina crouched and tried to tackle the sticky strands with a flat stick, yet the tip snapped. If the rope had not slipped through Marcus’s damp hands, they would have guided the raft around the slime before the sun crossed the roof. Water soaked his sleeves; her shoes lost traction on the wet marble. The local natural history society watched from nearby windows, yet no one intervened—this remained their experiment alone.
Marcus reached for a forgotten broom, wedged behind benches where wind had rolled it earlier. Together they levered the raft sideways, scraping away enough algae to free one end. Lina wished they had brought thicker gloves, but the work continued. A sudden splash broke their rhythm: a tiny turtle popped from under the raft and paddled across the newly opened path. The surprise jolt loosened the last clump of algae, and the raft drifted smoothly to the fountain center. Moss mats followed, spreading over the surface like puzzle pieces. Ripples rested against the platform edge.
