The Swing Against the Ladder- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Morning light filtered through tall pines on a gentle mountain slope. A red squirrel paused beside two empty swings hanging from a low branch; they were pushed softly by the breeze, tapping each other. Cool resin scent mixed with distant birdsong among shadowed trunks. Above the swings, a weathered ladder leaned against the trunk and climbed toward a tiny treehouse. Some shiny acorn shells have rolled out and now glisten on the doorway’s edge. The squirrel raised its tail, pressed sharp claws into the first rung, and started upward. Reaching that pile of forgotten food had become its only task.

The first rungs felt firm, yet halfway up a brittle strip broke. The snap threw the squirrel sideways; its hind paw slid, and the ladder swayed. At the same moment a strong gust shoved the hanging swings forward. One wooden seat hit the ladder and wedged beneath it, forming a new step that had not existed seconds earlier. The squirrel’s eyes widened; its claws gripped the moving seat, and the little body hopped onto it. The seat fell back, but momentum lifted the squirrel high enough to scramble over the top rung. Moments later the small creature buried its nose in a fresh mound of seeds inside the treehouse while the forest below rested in quiet shade.

清晨的陽光穿過高耸松樹，灑在緩緩上升的山坡上。一隻赤褐色的小松鼠停在兩個空盪鞦韆旁；鞦韆被微風輕推，彼此輕輕碰撞。樹脂的淡香與遠方鳥鳴交織在陰影的樹幹間。鞦韆上方，一架老舊的梯子靠在樹幹，通往高處的小樹屋。一些閃亮的橡實殼已經滾出，正閃閃發亮。松鼠豎起尾巴，把鋒利爪子插進第一根橫檔，開始向上攀爬。抵達那堆被遺忘的食物成了牠唯一的目標。

前幾根橫檔還算穩固，但爬到半途，一根脆裂的木條突然斷裂。清脆的裂聲把松鼠晃向一側，後腳打滑，梯子也開始搖晃。就在此時，一陣強風把懸掛的鞦韆猛力推前，其中一個木座撞到梯子，卡在下方，意外形成一個全新的踏點。松鼠的眼睛瞬間睜大，爪子抓緊那張仍在晃動的木座，彈身跳上去。木座回落，但這股衝力已把牠抬到足以翻過最上方橫檔的高度。數秒後，這隻小生物已經把鼻子埋進樹屋裡新鮮的種子堆，而下方的森林靜靜沐浴在樹蔭之中。
