Leo pushed the cabin door wide and breath rolled into the cool interior. The hearth waited under a mantle of river stones, and he pictured orange light flickering there before night settled outside the pines. The cabin had been rented by his aunt during summer, yet it now stood empty, missing even a single dry log. He tried the storage box beside the wall; only damp branches lay stacked in surplus bundles, each one heavy with moisture. If he had known how stubborn the chimney would be, he would have packed a metal brush instead of a sketchbook.

He knelt and blew on the coals left by previous guests, but nothing glowed. Wind slipped through cracked windowpanes, shaking a row of copper cups whose cheerful glint danced above the sink. Their soft ringing marked time while he tried several angles with flint and steel; sparks bounced across the grate, yet the wet branches only hissed. Frustration tightened his shoulders. During a pause, he noticed soot shifting behind the back wall. Knuckles tapping the stone revealed a hollow note. Curious, he pried out one loose brick; a hidden hinge clicked, and a narrow door edged open, cold air spilling from the darkness beyond.

Inside, lamplight from the cabin reached a quiet sanctuary of shelves covered with wicker baskets. Dried pinecones, trimmed and tidy, filled them like tiny armored flowers: a whole surplus supply waiting for winter nights. At the center stood a pride of wooden lions carved from maple, their paint chipped but their stances firm around a low iron brazier. Leo gathered the driest cones, stacked them beneath the grate, and added one lion to guard the pile. When the new fire finally caught, resin snapped and fragrant smoke curled upward; embers painted the cabin walls gold. Ash and sparks rested inside the broad stone hearth.
