English 原文
Ivy climbed over the iron gate as Leo pushed it open, and flakes of rust snapped loose with each slow step. The mansion behind the gate once belonged to a brewer who filled the town’s evenings with hoppy scent; today only a faint tang lingered in the cold air. A narrow gravel strip guided Leo toward the side wing where the old brewery connected to the house. Stone walls showed darker rectangles where summer vines had fallen, marking seasons like rings on a tree.
Inside, portraits of the founder lined the corridor. Gold paint dulled but still caught patchy afternoon light. The man in those frames wore a broad grin that fit local whispers: the brewer thrived as a daring entrepreneur long before the word became fashionable. Leo carried a wooden crate, ready to add whatever survived here to the museum’s growing collection. Floorboards bent under the weight of bottled decades, and a clock without hands ticked only when wind crept through gaps in the window frame.
A library door, swollen by damp, refused the first shove. Leo set the crate down, leaned in with one shoulder, and wood finally grated aside. Dust puffed up. A ladder on iron wheels stood against the tallest shelf; when he tried to roll it, rust locked the wheels. He kicked the frame once, metal groaned, and the ladder lurched. Books toppled. Volumes fanned out like cascading stories, thudding over the carpet in waves. Their fall cleared a narrow space on the middle shelf where a brass lever waited in plain view.
Leo gripped the lever; aged metal resisted yet shifted after a second pull. A section of shelving slid away, uncovering a tight stair that curled downward. Cool cellar air drifted upward. He raised the crate again and descended. Below, copper pipes crossed the ceiling, some still beaded with moisture that tapped into puddles. Barrels ringed the room, hoops mottled with patina. Embossed corks lay scattered, and a single bottle, glass dimmed by dust, rested on a stool as if set aside yesterday. He lifted it; the cork cracked, and a faint hiss slipped into the silence. Drips from a leaking pipe answered, steady and indifferent. Leo placed the bottle into the crate, shifted his grip, and traced the stair back toward daylight.
Light from the narrow stair rested across the untouched barrels.
