Street noise below thinned with the hour, leaving only humming air-conditioning vents and distant traffic.

Milo lifted the dish, yet the threaded bolt refused to bite. He twisted harder; the metal slipped and scraped. After a moment he flipped the tripod, brushed grit from the joint, and tried again. The bolt caught, and the dish rose, reflecting the first timid stars. A plastic box filled with spare equipment slid open; on top rested an old model rocket from the Vanguard series, its paint chipped but silver nose still bright. He set the toy aside, ran the cable to a slim laptop, and tapped the screen. An empty graph glowed, ready to trace the coming transmission.

Ten minutes later the tuner showed faint peaks. Milo nudged the dish three degrees east, and a rhythmic beep rolled through the tiny speaker. The pattern matched the call sign he expected, yet each burst ended with a clipped echo that seemed local rather than orbital. Before he could analyse it, a pigeon flapped across the roof edge. Wings brushed the cable, knocking the tripod just enough to skew alignment. The beep vanished. Kneeling fast, Milo righted the dish and replayed the buffer. The same tone he had broadcast during setup rolled out again, clearly reflected by the curved metal water tank behind him.

He switched the recorder to continuous mode anyway, letting the urban air add hiss and flutter. Streetlights below flickered in loose synchrony with distant traffic lamps, and heat from the building elevators rose in gentle pulses around his ankles. Somewhere overhead the real signal passed, unheard this time. Milo packed away the sensitive parts, leaving only the dish in place for tomorrow’s window. He pocketed the battered Vanguard model, closed the box, and stepped toward the hatchway while the roof settled back into stillness. The compact dish rested unevenly beside a faded vent, blinking in the mild night.
