The brass arms, however, had been bent by quiet neglect, and the paint on several planets now flaked like dry leaves.

Leo’s first attempt looked simple: he pressed the central crank, expecting the planets to orbit in neat circles. Nothing shifted. If he had found fresh oil, the gears would have turned at once, yet the mechanism refused to wake. He wrapped a cloth around one stubborn cog, but metal teeth slipped past each other. While searching for a better angle, he had to navigate narrow beams above his head; a missed step sent a small silver satellite tumbling from Saturn’s ring to the dusty floor. Its unexpected fall provided an intriguing clue—inside the loose ring a hidden screw waited, still gleaming under grime.

He loosened that screw, straightened a twisted rod, and wound the crank once more. Resistance returned, softer this time, as if the gears remembered their old path. A soft click rippled through the attic; every chain shivered, yet only one bronze sphere obeyed. Mercury began to circle the sun while the outer arms barely twitched. Leo steadied the frame, checked each joint, and accepted the partial victory as the bell below struck again. A single bronze sphere orbited slowly while the rest of the model rested in still shadow.
