The Beetle That Slipped Outside-

English 原文
Late afternoon light slid through the rooftop laboratory, landing on coils of wire, empty jars, and a half-built mechanical beetle. Etta balanced the beetle’s tiny shell between thumb and forefinger, scanning the crowded bench for a clear patch of metal. Nothing remained. Springs, tweezers, and unused printouts lay in uneven layers. She inhaled sharply and began to declutter the surface. Spare screws clinked into a tin, plastic cups nested themselves in the sink, and a cracked beaker found space beside a dusty microscope. A small photograph near the tap showed a smiling former chess champion, reputed strategist of the club; its frame tilted as her sleeve brushed past.
With half the bench reclaimed, Etta unfolded a sheet of grid paper and sketched a rough gameplan: solder joints first, sensors second, polish third. She plugged in the iron, intending to finalize the wiring before the sun slipped behind the opposite roof. The ventilation fan added its irregular whirr. A draft swept across the table, lifting the grid paper like a soft wave. It drifted against stacked circuit boards, toppled them, and the iron’s cord snagged on a stool. The iron tipped, struck the rim of a metal tray, and clattered safely onto a silicone mat, but the jolt sent a jar of steel bearings rolling. Spheres scattered across the tiles, clicking under cabinets and rattling against the door.
Etta crouched, collecting the bright bearings. One sphere slipped beneath a side cabinet. She pressed her palm under the wood, finding something thin and folded. A creased booklet slid out: aging workshop notes filled with sketches of cogs and handwritten arrows. The first page carried the bold heading “Rapid-Repair Route,” margins dense with tiny diagrams. She returned the booklet to the bench and pushed the window lever for extra breeze and light. The lever stuck. Her shoulder squared; she heaved once, and the latch yielded. Wind burst inside, tugging her ponytail sideways and flipping covers, lids, and the fresh gameplan alike.
Among the swirl, a sudden high-pitched buzz rose—the beetle’s micro-motor had caught the gust across its sensor. The small machine lurched forward, gears whining, legs ticking against the steel top. It crossed the ledge, slipped through the open window, and landed upright on the gutter outside. Etta froze, one hand on the sill, watching the toy insect crawl along the narrow metal channel until the breeze quieted and its power drained. Small gears rested among scattered paper on the bench.
