The Dropped Shell- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Milo knelt on the rocky shore beside the quiet harbor. He hunted for striped shells to decorate a plain wooden picture frame. Cold salt air brushed his cheeks, and distant engines rumbled beneath occasional gull calls. Half a bucket has already been filled, yet one gap on the frame remained. A single perfect shell glittered farther ahead, resting between two wet stones.

Milo stepped toward it. A sudden gust pushed against his knees and shook the bucket. Several shells were carried toward puddles by the restless wind. As he lunged, a seagull swooped low and seized the brightest piece. Wind and bird now fought over his morning’s work, pulling in opposite directions. Instead of racing after the bird, Milo flipped the empty bucket. It had once held bait and now rolled on its rim. The round edge caught the wind, spinning like a wheel across the stones. A sparrow burst from a crack in the pier, its sudden chirp startling the larger bird. The seagull flinched, released the shell, and glided back toward deeper water. The rolling bucket tapped the fallen shell and stopped, trapping it beneath the lip. Milo crouched, lifted both shell and bucket, and carried them away while water lapped behind him.
