The thin flow slipped between fallen leaves, carried bits of dust, and hissed softly against the roots of nearby apple trees. The stream gathered speed down a gentle slope and bumped into a toy figure that had been left behind—a plastic scientist in a white coat. The figure spun, struck a steel whisk that leaned against a crate, and the whisk rolled onward like a skinny wheel. Its spinning handle clipped a cardboard fundraiser box left after last weekend’s picnic; the box slid and jammed across a narrow drain. Blocked, the water rose, pressed through cracks, and burst into a hidden stone channel that had stayed dry for months.
