The Boat Inside the Box-

English 原文
A narrow cedar box, no longer than a forearm, lay under a stack of coiled ropes on the pier. A single stripe of azure paint, chipped and bleached, still clung to its lid like a quiet ribbon.
Mira shifted the ropes aside, and a jubilant blast from a ferry horn rippled across the water behind her. The box felt heavier than its size promised; a rusty clasp resisted when she thumbed it. She wedged a screwdriver from her knapsack under the clasp, leaned her weight, and the lid lifted with a muted rasp. Inside lay gears, splintered dowels, and what looked at first like the broken spine of a toy boat. She traced the warped hull, puzzled, then set the parts on a bollard, letting the sun dry the thin film of moisture trapped within. A gust from the harbor rolled a maverick wave against the piling, and the shock knocked one dowel to the planks. As she stooped to retrieve it, she noticed faint numbers carved along its side—measurements rather than decoration. The discovery nudged her curiosity, yet the joints refused to align; swollen wood kept each piece from sliding home.
She considered sliding everything back into the box, yet her fingers lingered over the warped hull. Instead of forcing the dowels, she carried the whole collection to a low workbench fixed beside a bait shed. There she dabbed the pieces with a rag dipped in seawater, easing salt crystals away. Grain by grain, softened fibers gave up their stiffness. When she tried the dowels again, one slipped through to its socket, then another. A shape emerged—not a child’s toy, but a compact teaching model of a racing yacht, the kind engineers test in shallow tanks. The hull’s underside, now rinsed, showed ballast grooves and pencil lines that predicted drag. The stripe on the lid matched the boat’s keel; the box itself had been a cradle, not a container. Mira paused, weighing the rebuilt frame in her palm. No plaque or signature told who fashioned it or why it had been hidden beneath rope for seasons, but the careful balance in the keel argued for long hours of forgotten study.
She propped the miniature yacht against the tarnished cleat.
