Three flat bricks lay in a neat row, two steps from the porch drain. Clara crouched beside them while her tabby cat waited on the wooden step, tail twitching like a small metronome. Earlier rainfall had left thin streams that crept between the bricks and disappeared under the iron grate. Clara tapped the first brick with an old spoon. The brick tipped, water slid off its edge, brushed a loose dandelion stem, and nudged the stem toward the grate. Curious, Clara aligned the second brick and tapped again. More water poured, pushed the stem farther, and carried a pale marble that had rested against the porch wall. For a brief period nothing touched the grate, yet tiny bubbles danced where the water swirled.

She paused to analyze the tiny course she had started. The atmosphere above the fence stayed thick and low, trapping a cool thread of air that carried the earthy smell of wet soil around her knees. The cat, a silent observer, crept closer and flicked the marble with one paw. The rolling glass ball struck the third brick, shook a puddle loose, and the new water combined with the older streams. The joined flow lifted the stem completely, wedged it across the grate slots, and blocked the exit. Pressure built; the water rose and spilled sideways into a row of dry leaves. Leaves drifted together, formed a soft dam, and forced water back toward Clara’s boots. She stepped aside, letting the stream spiral across the tiles until the leaves grew heavy and sank. The last trickle slid under the grate without a sound. Damp air hovered above the quiet porch boards.
