English 原文
The first stone step sat one stride below the kitchen door, and a narrow passage led five paces farther to the cellar’s central beam. Fern crouched on the cool floor, a striped tabby cat breathing beside her crate of apples. She wore a crimson apron already dotted with dark fruit stains. Along the nearest shelf, glass jars waited—some filled, others yawning open. A wide elastic strap dangled from a hook overhead; she intended to pull it across the jars before returning upstairs. Damp air slipped past the lantern flame, and distant drops tapped a metal pipe.
Fern tugged the strap. It stretched and showed pale bands where the material thinned; tension pulled it back toward the hook. She twisted her wrist and tried to loop the free end around a barrel post, yet the strap sprang away with a sharp bounce. The jars nudged forward under their own weight, glass necks knocking. The cat flinched, dropped a biscuit with a tiny crunch, and tapped the rolling jar with one paw; the mild rebound threatened the whole row. Fern pinched the strap again, shifted her knee against the shelf for compression, then threaded the rubber beneath the lowest plank.
The new angle shortened the span, so the band flexed rather than snapping. She folded the edge, hooked it behind a beam knot, and the line held. Air warmed near her lantern, while cold lingered below; dust floated through the split light in slow curls. A tasty scent of simmering apple skins drifted down the stair, marking time. Fern brushed glass crumbs away, then carefully lifted each jar into the tightened cradle, listening for further movement. Beside her ankle, the cat steadied its tail against the stone wall. Sticky marks remained where both had worked: a red thumb smear on the strap and a single paw print beside it. A loose shingle scraped against the gutter above.
