A sodium lamp above the repair shed blinked twice, throwing jagged silver patches across the wet pier. Under that shifting glow, a young raccoon crouched beside a coil of wire, nose twitching toward a bucket of shrimp shells on a trawler. The boat drifted outward; its narrow plank bridge scraped and tilted, showing daylight between wood and hull. Each bump came from the tug’s slow journey overnight, which had left the deck slick with algae. A crew farther along the dock loaded charts from recent research work, and their footsteps shook a loose barrel that rolled toward the raccoon’s path.

The barrel nudged a partner barrel, and both rocked until a rope stopped them. Water now lapped higher; the gap under the plank widened again. The raccoon ventured forward, but a handcart, left from an earlier rescue mission, blocked the straight line. Two routes remained: squeeze below the cart—safe yet slow—or climb nets stacked beside it. The nets promised speed, though rusted hooks poked through. The raccoon lunged onto the nets, claws skidding on damp cord. A hook snagged loose fur; a shell, carried from shore, slipped from its teeth and splashed. Mid-climb, the animal found something unexpected: a small green crab clung inside the mesh, waving calmly despite the race. One last push sent the raccoon over the cart frame, paws slapping the tilting plank just before another sway lifted it higher. Scales from the nets stuck along its flank, and water soaked its hind legs.

Wet paw prints crossed the slanted plank beside a line of webbed bird tracks. Waves slapped under the gap and kept rocking the wood.

桶撞上另一個桶，兩者搖晃，直到被繩索擋住。水面升得更高；跳板下的空隙再度擴大。浣熊鼓起勇氣向前，但早先救援任務留下的手推車阻住了筆直路線。它只剩兩條選擇：鑽過車底──安全卻慢，或爬上旁邊堆放的漁網。漁網能更快，卻有生鏽鉤子外露。浣熊奮力跳上漁網，爪子在潮濕繩索上打滑。一枚鉤子扯下鬆毛；它從岸邊帶來的貝殼滑落入水。半程時，它意外發現漁網裡夾著一隻綠蟹，在急促動作中依舊平靜揮動。浣熊最後一躍越過手推車，爪子拍上傾斜跳板，就在又一次搖晃把跳板抬得更高前。漁網上的魚鱗黏在它身側，海水浸濕後腿。

濕漉漉的爪印沿著斜跳板延伸，旁邊是一排海鳥蹼痕。縫隙下的浪花持續拍擊，木板不斷搖晃。
