Hands dusted with flour, she climbed a narrow service ladder toward a tuft jammed above the shaft. The swallow swept past again, circled, and alighted near the door-hinge. Only then did she notice a faint spiral gouged into the oak, worn smooth by years of touch and weather. She pressed the small whorl against the weathered lintel.
