The Footprints That Changed Shape-

English 原文
Iris pressed her boot into the slick mud, steadying the dented pail against her hip. A looping chain of dainty prints, each no larger than a coin, curved toward a stranded patch of eelgrass. She leaned closer; the edges of every mark showed a thin crust where yesterday’s water had dried and flaked away. Beside the line lay a garden gnome, paint peeled, beard speckled with salt, one ceramic hand still pointing at the horizon. Greenish residue clung to its hat, giving off a nostalgic hint of varnish that once made it shine beside porch steps. The tide still withdrew, leaving ripples that caught dull light and folded it back into darker hollows. Far offshore, gulls dipped, their calls muffled by the damp air. A briny sweetness hovered, mixing with faint tar escaping a cracked piling.
Not once did the shallow film reach her ankles, yet every footfall gave a soft slurp as mud closed again behind her. Bootlaces dangling, she braced on a barnacle-scarred beam and eased the gnome free; suction gripped its rounded base. She set it by the prints and, for a breath, remained still, imagination turning the tiny trail into a midnight march of secret creatures. She hesitated, tracing one print with her thumb, then compared it to the pattern streaked across the figure’s red jacket. A brittle clink sounded; a sliver of terracotta chipped free, revealing a smooth underside patterned with concentric ridges. Only after that tremor did she notice that every print matched those rings, each arc an imperfect copy of the same buried object.
Were the tide any quicker, the pool would already blur the evidence. Iris pondered whether to chase the mystery farther or leave it here. The outing, once a casual hunt for driftwood, now circled a single riddle pressed into mud. She wiped the gnome’s base across a scrap of cloth; the last traces of mud slid away, and ridged circles glimmered under the thin sun. In that light the trail changed meaning: what she had followed was not a creature’s path but the gnome sliding with each slow retreat of water, rewritten many times. Wind rattled dry kelp nearby like pages shifting when no reader stands close. A brief pause followed, her shadow stretching beside the plank as clouds thinned overhead. She placed the gnome on the highest driftwood plank, mud dripping from its beard onto the greying wood.
