Sugar Wall on the Counter- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Rice grains slid across the tiled counter while a small field mouse squeezed behind a jar. A butter crumb waited near the back wall, yet two forces blocked the path. First, a torn paper packet leaked sugar; the bright crystals trickled downhill and nudged the crumb farther away. Second, the crumb perched on a steep ridge of loose flour, so every tiny shake sent it rolling again. The mouse pinched his claws into the soft mound and tried a straight charge, but the sliding sugar and shifting flour pushed him back. Warm air from the stove carried the faint scent of a wool jacket draped over a chair, and sugar began to dance across its dark sleeve. Walking through this mix of popping seeds, cold salt, and drifting flour offered a unique experience for his twitching paws.

A metal spoon lay half-buried beside the flour ridge. The mouse propped its handle against the sugar stream, twisting the bowl end upward like a small ramp. Redirected, the falling sugar burst against the spoon and sprayed sideways, piling a fresh wall that blocked the downhill route. Freed from the twin pressures, the crumb slid only a fingertip and then stopped, surrounded by a sparkling mound. Sugar dust now speckled the jacket and even settled on a wooden toy cabin that stood at the window ledge. Loose peppercorns scattered nearby showed no belonging to any container. The mouse tucked the crumb under his chin, then released it on the counter’s safe flat. He turned toward the toy cabin where steam from a cooling pot curled above its roof.

A metal lid on the pot rattled twice as he crept closer.

旁邊半埋著一支金屬湯匙。田鼠把湯匙柄撐進糖流，轉動匙面，像搭起小斜坡。改變方向後，落下的糖撞到湯匙，向側面噴開，在坡下堆出一道新牆。雙重壓力消失，麵包屑只滑動一小段便停住，被閃亮糖粒包圍。糖粉現在點綴在外套上，也落在窗台上的木製小屋頂。散落的胡椒粒不屬任何容器。田鼠把麵包屑夾在下巴，隨即放到平坦處。牠轉身朝小屋走去，鍋子冒出的蒸氣在屋頂上方盤旋。

鍋蓋輕輕叮兩聲，牠悄悄靠近。
