Rosa slid a slim brass tube against a felt pad, trying to hear its clean ring. Each stroke set a soft hum inside the workshop. A loose door behind her answered with a dry creak. She has tested smaller chimes before, but none sounded so clear. The two sounds tangled like ropes in the air, and the pure note vanished inside the noise. Glen stood near the doorframe, watching dust motes float through a diagonal slice of light. That light warmed the wavy surface of a cedar board on the wall. With a quick gesture, he nudged the door closed. The latch sprang back, and the interruption returned, louder than before. Rosa pressed the tube to her ear, sighed, and tossed a rag toward the bench. The rag missed and brushed a stack of tin lids. The lids began to rattle in sympathy with the door’s groan.

Rosa tried holding the door still with both palms, yet even her breathing made the thin boards vibrate. The hum of the brass tube disappeared again. Glen noticed that the tube produced a deeper vibration when its open end pointed toward the noisy hinge. An idea flickered. He lifted a strip of soft leather and threaded it through the hollow tube. Then he looped the other end around the iron handle of the door. One gentle tug set the tube ringing. Its resonance travelled along the leather and shook the hinge in the opposite direction. The creak faded, replaced by a mellow echo that blended with the tube’s tone. A smile flashed across Rosa’s face as she struck the tube once more. The new vibration rippled outward. The stack of tin lids skittered off the bench, rolling across the floor in shimmering circles.

By the doorway, the leather loop held the brass tube against the door. Together they left a small arch of quiet metal against rough wood. Tin lids kept spinning near their boots, ringing in uneven intervals.
