Three arm-lengths from the sink, a wooden table stood under the wide kitchen window. Faye placed a clear jar at the table’s edge while a grey cat crouched on the warm sill, whiskers close to the glass. Noon sunlight entered in a narrow band, struck the jar, and threw a bright ellipse onto the tiled floor. The beam bent through the water and painted wavy lines across a heap of metal spoons. Yesterday’s planting of mint outside left dark soil crumbs on the sill, yet the cat ignored them. Faye leaned forward, turning the jar a few degrees. The ellipse broke into tiny stripes, like a thin rainbow pressing against the floor grout.

She lifted the jar and slipped a blue plate behind it. The color mixed with the light, and a turquoise glow shimmered over the spoons. A nearby pile of stacked pans rose like an obstacle; their dull sides swallowed most of the glow, so only thin ribbons escaped. Faye slid a yellow cushion from a chair, braced one knee on it, and shifted the jar toward the open space between pans. The glow jumped, now reflecting off a shiny ladle and up onto the ceiling. A faint aroma of toasted bread mixed with the quiet hiss from the kettle, hanging above the shifting colors. The cat twitched its tail, trying to communicate with a soft chirp, then tapped the ladle. The utensil rattled, shaking the ribbon until it blurred.

Curious, Faye poured a trickle of milk into the water. Cloudy streaks swirled inside, slowing the light’s flow and softening the colors. She rotated the jar again, searching for a sharper stripe, but the mixture only grew thicker. The sun inched higher, and the bright band slipped away from the table edge. A final turn offered no new pattern; instead, the cloudy jar blocked the beam entirely. A pale oval still blocked the patch of light on the tiles, and drops glimmered around it.
